There are so many choices of things to do in Chiang Mai it is difficult to know how best to spend your time. The main crowds gather in the square by Thapae Gate, where there is a stage, live music and lantern lighting. We knew this would be really busy and decided we would head to the Buddhist Temple Wat Phan Tao to see the monks chanting in a candle lit ceremony. We were really glad we chose this option, it was very magical and mysterious to witness and be part of. The lanterns, candles and chanting were the perfect back drop to start our new years festivities.
At about 11pm we left and headed toward the square to light lanterns before walking through the street market and getting a good spot on the bridge across the Ping River to watch the fireworks.
All in all a very good night indeed.
