San Cristobal de las Casas is the cultural capital of the Chiapas state of Mexico. It is located in the highlands and the long bus ride to get here from Palenque took on a very windy road that as we climbed higher and higher saw the landscape change until we were in thick pine forest, something we were not expecting to see.
The city itself has a really nice historical district with three pedestrianized streets lined with cafes, restaurants and boutique shops. There is a relaxed atmosphere and as such was a very pleasant place to relax and enjoy for a couple of days.
The great thing about coming here was using it as a base to explore the local indigenous communities in the surrounding towns. The Chiapas is one of the most indigenous areas of Mexico and closely linked to Guatemala in terms of traditions.
